Project Information
QVFR/C Clear intumescent coating system to achieve class 0 to a heritage timber chapel ceiling in County Galway, Ireland. This chapel is being recommissioned as a university classroom which highlights the importance to solidify the supporting ceiling structure, significantly reducing the surface spread of flame in the event of a fire. This building is a heritage building and its natural aesthetic has been maintained and protected by using our QVFR system.
As this area is being converted to an area of high occupancy an intumescent coating upgrade is required to ensure the safety of the occupants. Depending on the thickness of the timbers and the classification required (usually stated by the project fire engineer/consultant) the intumescent coating system differs. In this occasion a clear coating for class 0 spread of flame was required in order to provide further protection to the structure of the building in the event of a fire. With the QVFR system in place occupants will have enough time, in the event of a fire, to escape the premisses before the structural integrity of the timber ceiling fails.
In order to achieve this level of classification a competent installer must be used, someone who is trained in applying passive fire protection products to the tested standards. Furthermore, someone who has the appropriate insurances and structure to hold any and all liability in the event of a fire so that they can prove the application of the passive fire protective coating is correct to the specific standards.
Products Used
A primer was required for this project as the application of QVFR/C intumescent coating straight to timber could cause a negative reaction causing the intumescent paint to become cloudy.
Primer:
ES/VFR/P Primer @ 1 coat
Once the primer had fully dried the intumescent coating could then be applied to the timber chapel ceiling. The QVFR intumescent coating is a 2 part coating, where coat 1 is the QVFR clear intumescent coating which is followed by coat 2 QVFR clear intumescent coating with a finish of either matt/satin/glass.

In most cases a topcoat is required, however, this project did not require a topcoat.
